Progressive audiences worldwide are already in tune with RH Factor, a prog-rock ensemble which comes from the northeast quadrant of the United States. RH Factore is influenced by a variety of classic and contemporary art-rock bands, including Rush, Yes, Fates Warning, Dream Theater, The Police, and Saga. Their songs frequently feature odd time signatures, polyrhythms, and complex vocal arrangements.
The members of RH Factor are seasoned, consummate performers. A founding member of X-it, Kevin Hultberg supplied bass and backing vocals for both of its independent releases (Rockintoxication and Ragin'). Hultberg remained in Erie when X-it relocated to Los Angeles in 1991. Chris Rodler and Brett Rodler are two-thirds of Leger de Main. Leger has released two compact discs, The Concept Of Our Reality and Second First Impression.
RH Factor is not capitalizing on the recent trend of prog-metal clones; in fact, fans in Erie, Pennsylvania and the Northeast Ohio region may remember the days when this trio gigged as "Drama" in the early 1990's. The band abandoned live performances (and its former name) in 1994. "We hated the local live scene, and the bar patrons thought our music was crazy," said Chris Rodler, the elder of the talented Rodler brothers. "People just looked at us in bewilderment when we played." The band's talent in a live setting was wasted on inebriated bar patrons who were apt to yell, "Play some Skynard!"
The trio focused its efforts on recording a high-quality CD, RH Factor, which hit the streets in June of 1998. Many of the debut album's eight songs were conceived in 1991 and 1992. The album was previously issued in a limited edition cassette pressing of 200 copies, which quickly sold out. Despite this fact, very few people have had the opportunity to hear the music of RH Factor until now. Portions of the songs were re-recorded, remixed, and remastered, allowing the intricate musical parts and vocal harmonies to stand apart from the crowd. Two tracks ("Winter In July" and "Extrinsic") are previously unreleased.
In the early 1990's, Chris Rodler had no idea that the progressive underground scene even existed. His music, he later discovered, would whet the voracious appetites of prog-metal fans worldwide. This encouraged Rodler to stock his home studio, "The Fortress", with innovative gear, some of which was purchased specifically to record RH Factor. Like other members of the progressive community, the recordings that most influenced the making of the RH Factor album turned out to be Dream Theater's When Dream And Day Unite, Fates Warning's Perfect Symmetry, King Crimson's Discipline, and Drama by Yes. RH Factor combined the best elements of each of these classic albums, adding their own unique vision for a much anticipated, well-crafted new release.
